The Western Maryland Railway: Fireballs and Black Diamonds
Published in Hardcover by Garrigues House Pub (November, 1992)
Authors: Roger Cook and Karl Zimmermann
Average review score:

This is the FIRST Western Maryland Railway book to own
This is the FIRST Western Maryland Railway book to own...it is a great introduction to the WM and really continues to provide the definitive story of the Western Maryland. I own the first edition (now out of print) and the newer edition which was updated in the 1990's. Despite having B&W photos (remember it is an older book), this remains my favorite work on the WM. You can read it many times over and never tire of it. Also a companion book, I recommend purchasing "Western Maryland Railway in the Diesel Era." Diesel Era has more detailed discussion of WM operations and features the highest quality photographs of WM that I know of. Between the two, you'll become an expert on the Western Maryland---a true legend of the American railroading industry.

RE: Second Edition (1992)
Well written; the book includes many, many different and beautiful WM photos. A good reference as well as a joy to just read and enjoy the pictures. Even the beautiful dust cover pic (a WM steam train passing Confluence station on a lonely winter day against dark blue skies) makes you feel the rumble of the train against the winter silence. Includes additional material beyond 1st edition, this edition covering the WM saga up to 1992. I recommend this book as part of a West Virginia Railroading / Western Maryland Railway reference library. ISBN 0-9620844-4-1 (previously ISBN 0-8310-7139-7)

Comprehensive, well written history of the WM.

This is a well written history of the Western Maryland Railway, covering the time from birth to being absorbed by the Chessie System. Background history during major decisions of the railroad is excellent, giving insight to the evolution of the company.

Illustrations and maps are plentiful, augmenting the text.

This is, in my opinion, the best book on the WM that I have read; it has earned a place in my personal collection. I constantly refer to it in my research, and often reread it for pleasure.

Antietam: Essays on the 1862 Maryland Campaign
Published in Paperback by Kent State Univ Pr (December, 1989)
Author: Gary W. Gallagher
Average review score:

In depth Study
I agree with the previous reviewer.

This book hits home and goes deeper into the background of the causes and conflicts arrising from the Maryland Campaign of 1862.

Take this book with you when you visit Antietam National Battlefield. You will come away with a better understanding of what took place before and after America's Bloodiest single day battle.

Highly recommended!

A must have for any student of Antietam and the MD Campaign
After reading Murfin, Sears, Priest, and various magazine articles, I thought I would go a little deeper into the wheres and whys of September 1862. What a treat! Dennis Frye is the authority on Harper's Ferry ( who's fault? Miles, McClellan, or Franklin?) Robert Krick must have been a rebel because it seems as if he was right in their midst, and standing next to R. E. Lee at that, as they crossed the Potomac. As for A. Wilson Greene, he knows and has studied McClellan with the best of historians. George Brinton McClellan could have ended the war on several occasions but instead prolonged it and then patted himself on the back. And finally, Gary Gallagher shows us "a season of opportunity...in perspective" splendidly.

Baltimore Bouquets
The blocks are beautiful. I am a new quilter and found this book so easy to understand. It gave clear and easy directions for the techniques used for each flower, leaf & stem. As well as the basic stitches. I have now completed my fourth block. I love it!

Simplifies dimensional applique with beautiful results!
I have really enjoyed working through four of the blocks in this book. It has made dimensional applique come alive for me. The instructions are clear and the patterns are all delightful! It is a book worth owning, particularly if you are wanting to clarify some of the techniques used in Elly Sienkiewicz's books.

Baltimore: The Building of an American City
Published in Paperback by Johns Hopkins Univ Pr (September, 1997)
Author: Sherry H. Olson
Average review score:

Magnificently comprehensive Baltimore history
This is one of the finest and most complete Baltimore history books you well ever encounter in your life. However, it does inadvertently omit one significant fact in the creation of Baltimore. My great-grandfather was a German immigrant named Boston Fear. He was the original creator of Walbrook: Baltimore's very first suburb. Walbrook was originally named Fearville in honor of Boston Fear.
I highly recommend that individuals with an interest in the constructive formation of Baltimore purchase a copy of this exquisitely detailed book for your own personal collection.

Awesome
The best and most comprehensive history of Baltimore ever written. Olson is to be commended for her years of research and dedication, and the result is incredible.

Breaking Away to Virginia and Maryland Wineries (Washington Weekends)
Published in Paperback by Capital Books Inc (15 September, 2002)
Author: Elisabeth Frater
Average review score:

Great Travel Companion
Comprehensive review of the wineries in Virginia and Maryland. Describes how each of the wineries got started and a bit about the owners, growers, and/or winemakers. Also offers a brief summary of the wines produced. Includes sidebar-type sections on such topics as individual varietals, wine festivals, and competitions.

A wonderful resource if you like weekend getaways, beautiful farms, and, of course, sipping wine! Indispensable for budding regional wine connoisseurs and casual travelers alike.

Great for MD and VA residents and Visitors!
Elisabeth Frater's lovely travel guide is great for both residents and visitors. I have lived in Northern Virginia for 13 years and don't even drink alcohol, but I found this book to be useful. Frater gives clear, concise information, but also offers opinions. You hear the facts about each winery, but you also here the stories behind each one.

I have enjoyed living in this area much more after using Frater's book to plan weekend trips. Her book was invaluable when family came to visit recently.

Chesapeake Bay Log Canoes and Bugeyes
Published in Hardcover by Tidewater Pub (December, 1963)
Author: M. V. Brewington
Average review score:

Well researched, very detailed
This book is a compilation and expansion of two smaller works - one on log canoes and the other on the history of the bugeye. It is extremely well researched and includes detailed drawings / plans. Since the original pamphlet drafts date to the 1940s, the author had access to the actual builders and designers as well as to those that captained the boats either tonging or dredging for oysters. I read it from the perspective of someone interested in the history and culture of the Bay and thought the bugeye section was great. Since a stated purpose of the book is to capture specifications and how to build type information, the casual reader will probably find some of it somewhat dry.

the best book written on the subject
As a Chesapeake Bay native and avid log canoe sailor I found this book well-researched and amply illustrated. It is a bit dated, but no other work is as comprehensive. Model builders will find some line drawings, but HAMMS and Chapelle's "Small Sailing Craft" are probably better sources for that specific aspect of the working Bay craft. I would recommend this book for canoe/skipjack afficianados, modelers looking for an interesting alternative to square riggers, and marine history buffs who are not familiar with the genre. Brewington's narrative includes information that would be of interest to just about anyone interested in the Bay and its colorful history.

Chesapeake Boyhood: Memoirs of a Farm Boy (Maryland Paperback Bookshelf)
Published in Paperback by Johns Hopkins Univ Pr (April, 1997)
Author: William H. Turner
Average review score:

Earthy author
Dr. Turner writes with dry wit and intimate understanding of the beauty, complexity, and mystery of the Eastern Shore of VA.

Chesapeake Boyhood
With the recent purchase of a 1926 farmhouse on Hoopers Island on Maryland's Eastern Shore, I wanted to learn more about life on the Bay. My family and I hoped this book would shed light on perhaps a gentler time, with a return to "the basics." William Turner has written a wonderful account of his life growing up on the Chesapeake Bay in the 40's and '50s. The stories are entertaining, with laughs, as well as gasps, as well as tears. My sons, ages 10 and 6, beg me to retell his stories on our drives to our new Eastern Shore retreat home. From bear sightings to pig butchering to duck hunting adventures to sinking boats in the dead of winter, William Turner paints vivid images in our minds of life on the Chesapeake Bay during a time of neighborly help and family closeness. He is an artist, and shares his sketches in this book as well, which further brings home the true meaning of his stories. This is a treasure!

Compendium of the Confederate Armies/Kentucky,Maryland,Missouri: The Confederate Units and the Indian Units
Published in Hardcover by Facts on File, Inc. (January, 1995)
Author: Stewart Sifakis
Average review score:

A must have tool for the Civil War researcher
Very clearly presents the organization of the Confederate armies and sorts out a lot of the confusion regarding regimental consolidations and duplicate naming. A great tool for genealogists and Civil War researchers

Excellent reference book for Confederate research.
Mr. Sifakis has done an excellent job chronicling the Arkansas and Florida Confederate Armies, citing dates of organization, battles, commanders, mergers, and dispositions. I would highly recommend this book to any serious researcher.

Discovering Maryland Wineries
Published in Paperback by Resonant Publishing (12 December, 1998)
Author: Kevin M. Atticks
Average review score:

Atticks, makes you want to make you go "On the road again"
This well crafted Notebook size "travel Guide" is ready to make you hit the road for the fine wines, places, and people discribed within Maryland and just across the Mason-Dixon line in Pennsylvania. The author is always to the point yet gives you a very complete feel for each resource discussed, regardless if it the pet dogs or cats of the people, the people, their place or the fine fellowship or food they offer in their pursuit of a good vineyard experience.

"On The Road Again"

Okay so Willy Nelson can't tell wine from Lone Star beer, however you will be able to find your way across a wonderful breath of phrases and sentences, art work and landscape with "Discovering".

The book even has a cover photo that is ready to let you touch the dew on the grapes on the front this jewel of handbook. The "bunch" of fine grape places indside makes sure you are ready to take off your shoes, jump in the car , and jump in the first vat of grapes to dance on thru the night until they tickle your taste buds.

Be sure to send this to old friends as gift and as an idea guide for friends to take some time off together from the high tech , high pressure world of the professional and place you soul on the trail to a full heart, a happy head (full of wine) high, and a taste the deep air together. The fellowship found in wine treasures and wonders of the road will pay for the book a thousand times over!

Keep you eyes and ears open for more from this message from the man in the know, Kevin Atticks, in Maryland as he wanders down the lane to more good memories for us all just waiting for the making, vats, vines and victuals to come true!

Michael Cooper Mcooper712@hotmail.com PS:I am not related to the author nor have even met the bloak?

This pocket companion to MD wineries is long overdue.
The vineyards are nestled in the most beautiful parts of the state and are succinctly described by the author. A great feature is the author's note on the uniqueness of each one. Yes, the type of wines produced and the winery itself are the focal points, but it is also the meeting of the people behind the vines that makes this book an indispensable guide.

THE BEST cruising guide I've ever owned
This is definitely the BEST cruising guide that I've ever owned. Each of the many maps are annotated, for ease of reference. The restaurant reviews are consistent with our experiences, as are the descriptions of the places to visit and see.
